during monday night's giants/padres game, the giants had a lead in the middle of the 7th when lincecum was retired. correia, the closer, gave up 3 runs to tie the game in the 8th, and the game went into extra innings. they went through 2 more closing pitchers before winning the game, and announced that the final closer was awarded the win. why?

He would have been the "pitcher of record" when the lead was taken for the last time in the game.

MLB Rule 10.17 spells out winning and losing pitchers.

Vinnie Chulk was the Giants' pitcher when the winning run scored. He wasn't on the mound of course, but he was the last Giants pitcher (having pitched the top of the 11th) and the Giants won in the bottom of the 11th.
