This week I will be adding fish to my tank. The employees at the fish store listed off some fish that would be compatible with a betta. The other night my friend added a rope fish to hers, and I was wondering if they would go well with a betta?

Personally, I wouldn't. Ropefish are predatory and will eat small fish like guppies and neons. A betta is bigger, but it could still be injured if the ropefish was hungry, and since ropefish are more active at night, it could catch the betta as it's resting. Plus, ropefish get around 12" long and should be kept in a small group.

You might want to warn your friend about this, and let her know to keep a cover on her tank - ropefish like to jump!

NO!

The rope fish will make a quick snack of a Betta. Ropefish can also be difficult to maintain. Research them before purchasing one. This may be one of those species that starts off in a freshwater or brackish environment and then needs to live in Saltwater as it matures. The betta is not from a salt water or brackish environment.
