I've read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix several times and I just re-read the part about the prophecy. The part that has always confused me is where it says "Neither can live while the other survives..."
So Harry was saying that that means that one has to kill the other, right? Ok, I get that. But does that also mean that if the other person is dead, that you die as well? "Neither (Harry or Voldemort) can live while the other survives."
So if someone could help me with this, it would be much appreciated. Thanks. =)

I think it means that neither one of them will be able to live the lives that they want until the other is dead. While Harry survives, Voldemort is plagued by the fear of the one person who has the ability to kill him, and while Voldemort survives, Harry is in constant danger of being killed or having his friends kidnapped or killed.

Someone has also suggested that there are three people being mentioned in the sentence... Neither (Harry or Voldemort) can live while the other (some other person) survives. If that's the case, who is the other? :)

"Neither can live while the other survives."

This will cause three major possibilities:
1. Harry kills Voldemort.
2. Voldemort kills Harry.
3. They both die.

Yes, it is possible that they both die. They can't live if the other lives. But it is a possibility that one dies even though the other one dies.

No, it means that neither can live while the other survives...which translates to as long as they are both alive, one must die. So if Harry kills Voldemort, all's well in the world and he can live out his life.

basically both harry and voldemort can live but the battle between them will still go on until one of the two of them kills the other. the only way to stop this war is that harry has to kill voldemort or voldemort has to kill harry for the war to be over or at least averted.

I think hp_resource hit the nail on the head with the third person mentioned in the prophecy. If there really is a third, who could it be? My guess is someone who would take you by surprise. Read a little more into the prophecy..there is someone else who was born around the same time Harry was.

What I think it means is, that while both of them survive, there is always the possibility of one of them killing eachother, or dying. So it means that one of them, (Harry or Voldemort), has to murder eachother. It doesn't mean that if one dies they both die. It just means they can't both me alive. xxx Hope I helped!xxx

It means one must kill the other, not that they both die, and it has nothing to do with Neville.

i always thought the same thing.
and the way she words it here it almost seems that way.
this would explain that whole 'harry is a horcrux theory" that many have because if he is one then he would probably have to destroy himself to kill voldemorts soul. right?
