I think that her greatest achievement would have to be the demystification of the Monarchy. She showed us a human side to the lifestyle of the Royals, that they were prone to make mistakes, that they were capable of feeling and that they were not as aloof as people thought they were. That their presumed aloofness or apparent disregard of emotion was something they were brought up to believe in...that they could not show the slightest sign of weakness to their people and that they could hold their resolve.

I think that this has led to an increase in interest for the Royal Family and has earned them greater respect not only in the UK and the Commonwealth, but the rest of the world.

Her death propagated this process to what it has become today.

You will never learn if you rely on others to do your work for you. I hope with all my heart that you never become a doctor of medicine. I can only try not to diminish and belittle her achievements, by needlessly comparing them with what others have done or do. The question is, What did Princess Diana DO to help the world? Not, what did Princess Diana do in comparison to Princess Anne, Dame Elizabeth Taylor or anyone else, or even, who did it better. Also there is NO mention of charity either. I do remember Princess Diana, shaking hands with and hugging a man dying of AIDS and I remember her cradling a baby in her arms in Africa, also dying of the same terrible disease. This was at a time, when people would walk out if they knew an HIV/AIDS sufferer was in the same room and throw things away that they had touched. This was also at a time, when there were no drugs to repress HIV, it was a death sentence. She showed the world, that there was nothing to fear from casual contact with HIV/AIDS sufferers. I remember, when living in Japan, how Japanese people reacted, when they saw this on T.V and in the newspapers. It changed completely how they thought about the disease. That was just ONE of the things she did. She also brought the plight of the homeless to peoples attention, long before it became, the thing to do. The same goes for landmines. It had little to do with starting charities. It had EVERYTHING to do with bringing things to the attention of the public, and people who could help. Edit.........@ Lili, I'm sorry but, I really don't understand what you mean by "getting down and dirty in the trenches" What does it mean? What analogy is this? Down and dirty? Dirty? In the trenches? Trenches? I'm sorry if I come across as unbelievably thick but, I genuinely do not understand. Edit........as usual the dromedary is beneath me.

The simple fact DontBlink, is that she lent her face, position and popularity to advance various good causes. At the same time she gathered for herself much non-deserved hero worship. Dear Lili is quite correct in her comments. The spencer woman did not get herself dirty with the hard and dangerous work involved with her "sponsored causes"; she came, had her photo taken, talked a bit and then buggered off again. @ Ichiban: I'll wager you know exactly what Lili means dear boy. Edit. @ Ichiban: Greetings dear friend :-)

I think when she shook the hand of an Aids sufferer it had such a stigma before that, also she brought attention to land mines when no-one else wanted to know.
Her greatest achievement though was bringing the royal family into the modern world and giving her sons the common touch they were her pride and joy.

She was a great wife and mother, and people adored her, and wanted to be like her, and just not people in her country, but people around the world. She was a world icon who was taken in the most tragic way. She is greatly missed by millions of people today. She was a wonderful lady, and a great role model for young ladies everywhere. To me, those are her greatest achievements.

As one post said she made the connection between the upper crust and commoners. She made royalty more human and wasn't afraid to show her emotions.
