We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes;

But the plural of ox became oxen not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,

Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice;

Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,

Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?

If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet,

And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,

Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,

Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,

And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.

We speak of a brother and also of brethren,

But though we say mother we never say methren.

Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,

But imagine the feminine, she, shis and shim.

What you've stated here is quite good reasoning , but you have to take into consideration that these queer plurals are not English .These are loan words from other languages .This shows that English is a living body having the capacity of containing new words and phrases from other languages every year .For your satisfaction you have to have a look on the origin of English . On the whole it is a wonderful and interesting reasoning.

It is very difficult to learn as a second language. I think it's because English has adapted so many other languages and language orgins. Some latin, some greek, and some of everything else. In comparison, Spanish is so much easier to learn. It actually follows a set of rules.

LOL :-) Thanks a bunch for a great laugh!! Needed that this morning ;D Muchos gracias seniorita.

(meantime, and I hate to say it..BUT, technically speaking, the difficulties of a language is measured in several ways; some are mathematical methods, others rely on statistics and grammatical relativity,degree of clarity.....)

English is only the 4th or 5th common language in the world (per capita),its the most widely used (in terms of business and financial transactions) one of the simplest (in terms of grammar) but one of the least expressive (in terms of diction, literature,poetry,directness...etc)

This is a good poem to find. I tutored someone today with their English and in turn me with Spanish. I will share this poem with them. I don't know if I have a good answer for why it is soo hard but good for you for trying to learn the language.
Good Luck.

Because english is a terrible language. Kind of an after-thought of other languages. It's all very confusing.

A snake in the grass is an asp! But a grasp in the *** is a goose!
It may be hard but at least we have word for everything!

do you notice that walking is hard too?
i takes hundreds of experiment before you can actually walk or running, yet you still fall sometimes.
so everything is hard at the beginning... but when you get the hang of it...it's easy.... yet you still make mistake too sometimes, after all we are only human.
keep the faith!
