I have had quite a few fry from my female guppies. I found that once you can see the first hint of a tail and colors, you can tell what sex the fish are. The females will have little mini gravid spots on them. I have found that I have very few females, and many males. It depends on temp, ph, and hardness...

You won't be able to tell the gender of the babies right away. In a few weeks they will start to change, and the males will develop a more pointed anal fin, and after that their colors will start to appear. This is the time to separate the males and females.

The male fry are not born with their colourful tails. These develop when they mature.
