The reasons I asked this is because when I was 48 AARP started sending me membership info and all letters started with, "Now that you are almost 50....." and I have seen signs that say senior discounts 55 and over. I was just curious as to what the concensus was on what is considered 'senior' nowadays given that I have read that todays 'seniors' are the new 'middle aged". Thanks for all of the interesting answers and the humorous ones too!

Hi Karen!
Well I'm 56 and get some great restaurant deals so guess I'm a senior and I'm not complaining.
Still vertical and ventilating and getting an affordable break from the kitchen.
Life is good!

The US Census and many demographers consider seniors to be age 65 and older. AARP says 55, but they're just after membership :)

IN INDIA:
For Income Tax exemption : 65 Years.
For .5% extra interest in Banks : 60 Years
For Retirement:-
STATE Governments : 58 Years
CENTRAL Govt. 62 Years.
If you are capable of earning continuously no senior citizenship confirmed on you.

There are always those legal and statutory definitions that one can refer to and or use.

Practically, everyone drift into their second childhood - so where's the reason to call anyone 'senior', as meaning 'old'?

A more apt and proper term, *I* submit, is 'junior' citizens.

well, mostly age 55 is recognized as "senior", I think mcDonalds does.. or is that another quick outfit?
Actually I think a lot of grey hair will do the trick most times.. hahaha
two things happen to you as you get older, the first is you lose your memory, ....... and I can't remember the other three..

I recently saw an article about hair styles that said it is OK for older women to wear their hair longer now, and all the pictures were of actresses over 40! How's that for old.
