Far and away, Roland (The Gunslinger) from Stephen King's The Dark Tower Series.
If you haven't read anything from the seven-book series, skim through the first book, "The Gunslinger", then really settle in and read or listen to an audiobook of the second one, "The Drawing of the Three."
I've read a lot of classic and modern fiction, and that book ranks right up there with the best all time.
