The Athlon 64 X2 series is the 2nd-fastest line of dual-core processors for consumer desktops available (behind the Intel Core 2 duo), so they are good.

The 3600+ is pretty low-end, with AMD chips the number before the plus sign tells you how fast it is... I'd recommend a 4000+ or higher if your budget allows. Certainly nothing less than a 3800+ no matter what.

The Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 is the least expensive of the Core 2 Duo line- it's a little faster than the AMD X2 4200+ so if you find one for about the same price, take that instead.

By the way, the Core 2 Duos use less energy and run cooler than AMD X2s (not hotter, like the old Pentium chips)

Forget Intel. They run too hot and are overpriced. AMD all the way. It will run plenty fast, you are better off putting more money into RAM or a better video card than wasting money on an Intel chip that is going to cook your whole system.
