Ok so i have a 5" red belly piranha in a 35 gallon tank and the piranha always stays on the left side of the tank and does not swim at all. the only time i see him swim is when i feed him at night and when he is really scared. Why is he not the active during the day or when not being fed or scared?

Piranhas are related to tetras and silver dollars, and are schooling fish - they're more comfortable if they're in a group of several of their own kind. By themselves they tend to be rather shy.

what temperature is the water at in the tank? a red bellie wants teh temperature to be about the 24c - 26c point. if the water is too far above or below this that can make the fish feel very "lazy" imagine how you feel on a very hot or a very cold day.. not wanting to do much. thats how your fish will probably feel. maybe give him something to do? placing alot of live plants in there would give him something to focus on Piranah are great internal designers in their tanks. you place plants in and they will rearrange them jsut how they like them. if you correct them, the piranah will do the exact same thing again and reposition things just how he / she likes them. giving your fish smething like this. jusst as a bit of mental stimulation might work. but main things i would say woul be to get the temperature checked on teh water first

Is your tank well planted..piranhas like to rest in plants and only come out to eat. they are also nervous of public viewing.

I have had 7 of them since they were an inch and they are now 4-6 inches and they have always done this. They are very shy creatures despite the belief that they are ravenous monsters. Lots of hiding places makes them a bit bolder.

You need to create a touristy atmosphere in which he can feel at one with his surroundings. I suggest turning up his lamp a notch or two, or if theres no dial on it, maybe leaving it on for an extra hour each day. I was going to say, sink a flannel down to the tanks bottom so he can sunbathe. Paraná's, don't they like sunglasses?
