the 402 is just a bored out 396 ,but they run exceptionally well ,even in the impala,s,there aren't many of them around though,i have owned one,and they will run with any other engine on the road, and they hold up really well also, just be sure and have the heads checked really good they did have some problems with the valve guides in those engines, and it caused them to smoke some, other than that there a good engine, most modern machine shops now have all the equipment to make these real good engines, they run a considerable amount of horse power anyway, its not hard though to get 400 horse power from one of those with very little modifications to them, good luck on it hope you get it going,

Read up on jetting/tuning the carb properly---had a 427 in a 69 Camaro and I had to tweak/stagger the jet sizes around (with a high rise intake) to run good---something about the intake runners of different length's causing the cylinders to fill differently, if I recall. 402 is just a bored out 396 like D-Man said and a fairly good motor---just not as many cubes as a 427 or 454. The usual good street cam, headers--pick ones that are right for your engine setup--good carb tuned for your setup and high perf ignition system, build in compression ratio for todays octane levels.
