I'm not an animal activist or anything but I do like some animals and some more than others.
I have been both a pet owner and a hunter so I have seen both sides.
I now don't hunt but neither have I time or the space for any animals.
One thing I have observed however, is that some humans are capable of horific acts of cruelty towards animals. Since many animals (especially domesticated ones) rely on humans for care and protection and are otherwise unable to defend themselves or even seek redress, a set of laws have been drawn up to protect them. This may in the form of limits placed fishing/hunting/culling to protect the species or more relevant to this question, specific rules about treatment of animals. ( cruelty, neglect etc.)
I think most people would agree that these laws are right and necessary.
The down side is that sometimes an individual case will hit the headlines in which say, some farmer in the Outer Hebrides gets six months for animal neglect whilst, somewhere in Essex a pervert walks away with a caution.
This situation is not because of our laws, it is because of our law enforcers and our courts making bad judgements and handing down silly punishments.
These totally independant and unrelated judgements cannot really be compared, although we all do it, especially when we see the latest crazy 'sentence' passed down by some magistrate or Judge who is so out of touch with reality he may as well be living on planet Zog!

Because animals are defenseless, just like kids. I know what you mean about child molesters getting a slap on the wrist compared to what happens to animal abusers. But, still, probably 90% of animal abuse goes unreported. So I don't think it's all that disproportionate.

Animal right activist are pure hypocrites. They don't criticize killer whales for eating manatees or crows for eating a bug, the only species they are picking on are.. just guess... of course, humans. They do hate humans. I see vegans telling that chickens are equally, if not more, important that humans. Some extremist vegan terrorists think that animals deserve more rights than humans. It really frightens me. I'm glad that majority of people don't take them seriously.

The book thrown at them? A fine is what you consider the book thrown at them? I'd learn a little more about the law before you say animal abusers get more jail time then pedophiles or murderers.

First of all , animals are the only truly honest creatures on the planet, as to your complaint about pedophiles or rapists , I can't say on here what I'd like to see done to them , but part of the answer to your question is the current "PC" syndrome that covers this country , bolstered I might add by the bleeding heart left........................

Because they often DO!!! It's OK to drop white phosphorus on Iraqi children and babies so that they can suffer immensely as their their skin is melted off while they are alive, but God FORBID little Barney ever be part of any "collateral damage" on the "War on Terror." NO!!!! We'd make sure all presidential PETS are out of the way if any harsh measures were going to take place near HIS precious one!

I think very few criminals get the punishment they deserve, period. I DEFINTELY don't think that animal abusers get nearly enough punishment because they are not human. You'd think that judges would consider the fact that those who commit more serious crimes usually start with "lesser crimes", like animal abuse, pyromania, etc.
Sorry, but I don't agree with your assumption on this issue.

Animals are deemed property and it requires less evidence to convict and sentence.
