I am a waitress at a casual dining restaurant. I have to wear a uniform and have my hair pulled back(so dressing nice or looking professional are not really options here). I work at lunchtime so I don't have much time to talk to my customers for very long and most of my customers are in a hurry and don't want to talk much..... Their only concern is a speedy lunch (the customer will inform me of this) So I am polite, deliver food promptly without a mistake, and thank them for visiting..... among getting refills, calculationg coupons, running food, answering questions about the menu, bussing my tables and offering dessert.I know I am a good waitress, but sometimes my tips just aren't reflecting my quality of work.

Any suggestions on how I can make better tips

or

please share any experiences with a server that inclined you to tip better.

This is going to sound manipulative as hell, but it may be worth a try. Observe the customer's outfit, jewelry, and any belongings they may use at the table. When you deliver the tab, make a comment specific to one item. For example:

"Handsome suit! Is it an Armani?" - or-

"Stylish cell! What kind is it?"

Questions such as these when asked by a service industry employee tend to make a thoughtful customer reflect on how blessed they are, career-wise. Those who've worked their way through more crappy jobs than they'd care to admit will usually tip more generously out of empathy and/or gratitude.

You sound like you do a wonderful job, but in this line of work some people are just cheap and it's a shame, because we work so hard and it's so under appreciated. If somethings not right they complain quickly, but when everything is great, it's mostly unappreciated. Just keep up the good work!!

I always smile. All the time, even if I was in a really crappy mood, I smile. Smiles really make the customers feel better.
