do it the cheap way all us country folk do. go get you a gallon of kerosene.
drain all your oil from your car.
put plug back in oil pan, then pour in the gallon of kerosene. let car run for about 3 minutes, shut off and let drain.
this cleans the heck out of engines and does not harm.
or you can always run a quart of transmission fluid in your oil to clean it out to. then change the oil in about a week.
but i will stay with kerosene

Sludge builds up because of many reasons:
1) Poor quality oil
2) Infrequent changes
3) Wrong grade (too thin and it overheats - to thick and it can not lubricate)
4) Excessive or unfiltered blowback from the smog system

Whatever the reason, you will not get rid of it by changing types of oils. Your best bet is:

1) Use a light weight oil and do not overheat the engine. Change the oil frequently for several weeks ; or
2) Get a commercial engine cleaner which is basically a solvent that you run thru the engine in lieu of or in addition to oil,
3) Make your own solvent mixture

In any case you need to follow the instructions quite carefully and be prepared for frequent oil changes between 'cleanings;.

Generally two applications of a solvent will clean out a lot of the sludge. After that start watching your oil. and change it monthly (along with the filter).

No need to switch to a synthetic oil (at about $5 a quart last time I looked) unless you want to spend more money for oil. A monthly change will extend the life of your engine and keep the interior of it fairly clean too. This also assumes, of course, that you perform other routine maint. too.

good luck

Who told you that you had sludge? If you do have it, then you will need a product that is specifically designed to remove sludge and buildup. Synthetic oil won't cut it. But, keep in mind that if you have a high mileage engine, it is not always wise to clean it all out. Often times, the buildup actually replaces the worn metal parts and keeps the engine running smoothly. When you strip all that away, you will have parts moving that are no longer fitting precisely, which can give you more problems than you have now.

What you do is get an oil change with 10-30 drive around for about 30 mins. then change the oil again but this time add a bottle of Lucas oil treatment, with a high quality oil filter. Then all that sludge will be gone. Trust me. I do it all the time.

you need to put in an engine cleaner in the oil then change the oil that same day... switching to synthetic will help your car last longer only if you do your part and take care of the car...

No.

Go to walmart and my Gumout products and run through several tanks of gas putting different ones in with each fillup (on an empty tank, then fill up). This will improve performance, give better gas mileage, AND clear out engine sludge.

If you switch to synthetic, they should put a cleaner in first. Run that several days, then put in the synthetic oil.

I doubt if it will. It would depend on the amount of detergent that is in the oil. Go to the auto parts store and see what additive they have for cleaning out the engine. good luck.

Yes I think that might help, couldn't hurt.
When I use to change my oil I use to put a quart of transmisson fluid to help keep the engine clean. Along with 7 quarts of new oil.

no it wont actually help clean it out that much it needs an engine flush to do that part of it,the synthetic oil will stop it from getting any worse in it though, but to remove all of it you,ll need to clean it out real good to get rid of it,you,ll never get rid of all of it,but you can get the majority of it out,and using synthetic oil will stop it from getting any worse, good luck hope this helps.
