Is it just me or are there a lot of people that don't use proper grammer? I mean, sometimes there are questions or answers that you can't even understand, no offence. There are no periods, comas, or anything like that. Sometimes I will just skip the question because it doesn't make any sense at all! And I'm not talking about people saying kewl or things like that. They leave words out of their sentences and everything! I can't be the only one that noticed this! No offence to those that write like that, I was just curious why? Thanks!

No, you are correct. However, I must point out that you made the following mistakes:

grammer - should be "g-r-a-m-m-A-r"
offence (twice) - should be "o-f-f-e-n-S-e"
comas - should be "c-o-m-M-a-s"

It's ironic, though, because these people actually think they can get through life in half-intelligible IM "speak." If they can, then what is this world coming to? Well, no matter what, what is this world coming to? I wish people would speak the language it was meant to be spoken and write the language the way it was meant to be written. I find it ridiculous and ignorant when people post questions in the manner you have mentioned.

Hope this helps and don't worry - you are not the only one that hates the way people "speak" today!
;-)

You need to check your spelling, too. I noticed that the words GRAMMAR, OFFENSE, and COMMAS were misspelled in your question. It is because the schools today do not believe in teaching children PHONICS (or how words sound) any more. They believe a child should be able to "sight read" (you see the word, remember how to pronounce it, and spell it), and end it there. Children need to also be taught that groups of letters can be pronounced more than one way depending on if it is a "hard" or "soft" sound. For instance: "CH" is soft when the word "chug" is said, but hard--like a K-- if "character" is said; the letter G is soft in the name George, but hard in the word "GIVE"; and the letters PH together can be pronounced like an F; if PS is together (psychology), all you hear is the S; the letter Y can be consonant or vowel depending on the word it's used in. You see what I mean??
PS: I give you a pat on the back for remembering that A LOT is always 2 words, unless you mean to give out equal shares and then it is "ALLOT." :)

I think it has many causes, but mainly it is because of the advent of the computer.

The computer made communication quicker and easier. Writing to someone doesn't take as much time or have the impact that it used too.

This makes it less important than it used to be, and people don't take the time thinking about what they've written or worrying that they sound uneducated in what they have written.

Add texting and a lack of concentration on the basics of English in the schools..........

P.S. Not to be picky, but since you started it, grammer isn't a word, it's grammar, and offense is the correct spelling in this usage.

It's true, there are some questions here that one can't even understand. As for misspellings, it's something we're all guilty of from time to time. It should be noted, however, that certain words, like offence, are spelled correctly in other countries. Americans do not have the only licence on the dictionaries. Please consider this when you respond and coulour your answers with such certainty.

Let us parse this question, as a copy editor might:

"Is it just me or " : Opening with a subjunctive clause; no use of a comma between "me" and "or".

"Don't write right" CHANGE to "Do not write correctly"

DELETE "I mean" and "no offense"

"offense" is misspelled

CHANGE "you" to "a person"

"comma" is misspelled

CHANGE "Sometimes" to "At times"

DELETE "just"

Do not begin a sentence with a conjunction.

DELETE "and everything!"

INSERT "has" between "that" and "noticed"

"No offense to": Opening with a subjunctive clause.

"just curious why" : no use of punctuation between "curious" and "why".

The entire question attempts to convey a sense of exasperation with improper and lazy usage of the English language. It is, however, couched in such colloquial language usage and clumsy sentence structure that it's impact is severely diluted.

Ive noticed it too. I put it down to stupidity and ignorance. I think we commonly underestimate how many inadequately educated people there are in the world. Its frustrating for me, because I dont find linguistics that difficult, but obviously others do. I do the same as you, when they're that brain dead that they cant even construct a question that makes sense, I assume that they arent smart enough to know good advice when they see it anyway, and go to another question. You make a valid point.

Well, first and most obvious reason is that this
service is used by people all over the world
and for whom English is their second (or 25th...)
language.

I think a lot of the users here spend a lot of time
text messaging where you are only sending the
message to one person and you abbreviate a lot.
They haven't gotten used to the concept that things
that are read by a lot of people should probably
be proof-read.

And some people just don't care.

Part of it is the rise of text messaging where things are cut out and you have to assume things.

Even a comma can affect a sentence

"Eats shoots and leaves"

Eats, shoots and leaves."

There are many people around the world, that have English as their second language. I think it would be better if we can use English correctly. However, we should understand other people who made some mistakes sometimes too. We can tell them politely for their learning.
"The more people practice, the more they can do better".
