when you swim under water the pressure cause your ears to pop. almost like driving down a mountain your ears pop. the deeper you go into the atmosphere the higher the pressure for example, when you go deep into the ocean; if you do not have the right equipment the pressure can crush you {approx 200 ft deep} when you go to high into the atmosphere without the right equipment you will expand till you eventually explode.

Yeah it's water pressing in on your ear drums. You can get rid of the noise by pinching you nose closed and blowing through it gently.
