But he did take one record from the Babe.
Mick was, for several years, the career leader in batter strikeouts. Ruth took the record in 1926, pushed it higher until he retired in 1935 (with 1330), and held it until 1964, when Mick surpassed him. Mantle's final total was 1710, which stood from his retirement in 1968 until he was passed by Willie Stargell in 1978.
Reggie Jackson took it over in 1982 and retired in 1987 with 2597 (more than he had hits). And Reggie still holds the record today; only Sosa is really close to challenging him, though if Thome plays long enough he could make a run at it as well.
