In my opinion, alot of Americans seem to believe that the entire world loves us and wants to live here. That is false..most people do not like America since we invaded Iraq and even before that. Believe it or not....I was on a trip in Italy when 9/11 happened and many of the people there said that we deserved it. Shocking and horrifying but true. I have traveled to many other parts of the world...they do NOT like the U.S. or what we are doing.

The problem we have is that we think we have to get others to like us. We need to have an image in the world I agree, but that image shouldn't include "liking us." It should be based more on Respect of us.

I agree the entire world does not love us. Many people around the world are not happy about the war in Iraq.
I have also done some traveling in the world since 9/11 (mostly in Turkey and the Middle East) and have found that many people strongly dislike our President (and all other American politicians for that matter) but do not dislike Americans. I remember talking to a school teacher in Turkey and he said that most of America seems to be against the war except for a few hundred. I asked who he meant by the few hundred, and he said Bush and the US Congress. Others I have had a chance to talk with do not like the US Government but have nothing against individual US citizens. Obviously these are just random examples, no professional sampling or polling done. But I am not sure that most people hate us. Many do, but I can guarantee you that many hated us before the war.
About a year ago, I had a chance to talk with a young man from Turkmenistan. When he found out that I was an American, he thanked me very much for what my country has done for him. The US has programs in some of the Central Asian countries that allows for people in CA to go to the US for college and helps pay for some of the school costs. He was able to get a Masters degree in English and is employed as a school teacher.
Again, this is just a story, but my point is that there are still people that want to come to America to study and some to live here permanently. We are currently having a debate in America about illegal immigrants. We would not have this debate if this country did not provide opportunities that other countries did not. America is still a place of destination for many, though admittedly probably not as many as in the past.

I agree and I found out that realization first hand as well. I used to live in England before and after 9/11. Not everyone, but a few jerks made some horrible comments to me just because I was an American, (before 9/11). I was just minding my own business, eating lunch with a fellow American student. We weren't loud or anything. They could tell we were American by our accents and were quite rude about it.

And after 9/11, I got some "you deserved it" comments from of all nationalities but Italians! What's up them? All the English people seemed pretty sympathetic that I can remember. I think they have a strong comradely with us but I was still surprised that even some English people don't like us. It made me sad because they didn't even know me. They just didn't like America, therefore, me as well. It was an eye-opening experience and many naive Americans that haven't travelled don't realize this dislike for us.

Many don't like our foreign policy and Bush. But still, many want to live in this country. We still deliver relief aid to all over the world delivering warm blankets, and foods to needy. We still have safe living environment many around the world envy.

But lot of Americans do know that our image have suffered since Iraq War started. With CIA secret prisons, Abu Grab and more. The public knows the world have different view now of the US.

I think the real myth is that the US is causing Iraq problem by itself when in fact it is combination of lot of things(US led war, Sunni/Shiite tension, regional conflicts...etc) Too many are blaming US for every little problems around the world. Too many think all problems will some how solve itself if the US pull back and don't get involved.

Far too many Americans believe that our health care system works just fine, and that it's not overpriced in the favor of the pharmaceutical companies and the lawyers, and that a single-payer system would be a terrible step backwards, when in fact we pay more than any other country for what we get, and we fare about 25th in overall health statistics.

It's amazing how few are actually answering the question, which seems to be "What is an erroneous notion shared by most Americans?" not "Why do others around the world like us or not like us and should we care?"

Dang!!

Hon, I don't know too many Americans who are naive enough to believe that the world still loves us. Unfortunately, the response of too many of them is, Screw 'em, who cares?
Most people would notice that immigrants to the U.S. in the past 20 years are from desperate, poverty-stricken third-world countries. Think about it...how many of you know immigrants from western Europe, Japan, or other places where the standard of living is similar to that of the U.S.? They don't WANT to live here. Long gone are the days of the Irish, Italians and Germans beating the door down to get into the States.
I live an hour away from Canada in Michigan, and I don't know a single Canadian who has emigrated here.

Most people do not hate Americans or what America stands for, they hate (along with most Americans) the actions of our government.

"Many" Americans agree on something as many other Americans disagree on the same exact thing, The one thing that the majority of Americans believe that is wrong is non-existent because Americans are completely divided down ideological lines.

The War on Drugs. It does nothing but promote a criminal industry. Drugs are easier for minors to get than alcohol.
