I've worked at this place for a year now. I'm not a receptionist but i do cover the phones, when its needed. One receptionist quit, and they tried asking everyone to cover phone except me. Then finally they asked me because they ran out of options. They changed my hours around to cover the receptionist spot. They didn't ask me to be receptionist, just to change my hours and cover phones. Now thier posting a receptionist position in the paper, looking for someone to fill my time slot. The boss acts aloof around me, i feel ignored, and underappreciated by everyone. Everyone is so secretive, i only found out about the position in the paper because the lady call from the newspaper while i was covering phones. Are they looking for someone to be receptionist so i can go back to my old hours, or give me the boot? i need advice, thanks

It could be either that you suggest. I recommend you schedule an appointment with your boss and ask how he or she feels about your job performance. Don't mention anything about the receptionist position or the call you accepted ... just act innocent and seek answers in order to sincerely improve your performance. If they are dishonest and unprofessional with you then it may be best to leave anyhow ...by giving notice and before getting fired.

But I suspect they are simply filling the spot and you will return to your old schedule ...

I agree with most people here who say getting a new receptionist would enable you to resume your previous duties. I know how you feel because you probably feel that you would qualify for the position. You could sit down with your manager and find out why you weren't considered for the position. You already know the routine and you were doing a good job at it. However, before you do, there are some questions that you need to ask yourself ........Are you qualified for the position (did you have to take any courses etc)? Are you a people person? When you answer the phones do you represent the company well? Do you act professionally on the job? Can you handle the stress that comes with the position? if your answer is yes to all the questions.........Maybe you should consider meeting with your boss to see why he made the decision he did.

I'm not sure because you didn't say what your job is. All I know is that you're not the receptionist but you do answer phones. If they hire a new receptionist then you can do your own job (whatever that is) although it does kind of seem like they've been using you. Why don't you try finding new employment on the sly? This way if they do fire you you'll already be a step ahead of the game. Good luck!

I think they're looking for another receptionist and most likely you will go back to your old job. I know it's not easy, but with the aloof boss, I would start looking for another job where it's a more pleasant place to work. You now can truthfully tell people you were a receptionist.

Talk to the HR department at the office. Ask them what is happening and if you are going back to your old job or not. No HR department? Then take the boss aside and ask him directly, "Am I now the secretary or am I going back to my old job?". Aloof or not, tell him you deserve to know what is going on.

They may just want to fill the position so you can get back to your other job but I would probably talk to my boss if i was you and start looking just in case not to worry you , but you have to be prepared no job is guaranteed.

first, ur boss is rude for ignoring u and disrespecting u like that.

next, it's a 50:50 chance that u might get fired or just noone wanted u to be receptionist, maybe u did something that u thought was funny but other people might have thought it wasn't funny.

I think you should sit down with your boss and share your concerns. Stress all the positive things you have done for the company and then politely ask him what he sees in your future with the firm. Stress that you WANT to stay and contribute more but you're just feeling uncomfortable.

It would seem you are the new receptionist...especially since you're still there and they are hiring to fill your hours. If they wanted to fire you, you would all ready be gone.
