Your professor is splitting hairs,Ask him why some use the term Motorcar for an automoble,as most of those are powered by engines also.Maybe it is because some early autos and some early motorcycles were actually powered electric MOTORS?And the name just stuck.

I think it goes back a century to the days when automobiles were called motor cars. That made motorcycles a natural phrase to use. No body ever said common wording was precise.

Why do they call those little ones mo-peds when you do less pedalling not mo' when you are on them - try that question on your professor.

Because your prof is thinking that a motor is electrical, and an enginie is combustion. That is old thinking. According to Webster's New World Dictionary: a motor is anything that produces or imparts motion. Go get 'em!

When I went to school, I had to look up my own answers. Using real books. Asking others doesn't work when you have to cite references. "He said so" doesn't work. So I know the answer. Have you found it yet?
