When they were first invented, I believe the original term was "motorized bicycle." Over the years, popular usage has shortened the term to "motorcycle." Just one more example of how the English language evolves over time.

Your professor is splitting hairs,Ask him why some use the term Motorcar for an automoble,as most of those are powered by engines also.Maybe it is because some early autos and some early motorcycles were actually powered electric MOTORS?And the name just stuck.

Due to a complete lack of understanding of engineering terms, motor is often used in place of engine. However, with few exceptions, most automotive engines are started and run electricaly until combustion takes place, thus motoring.

because at the time they were introduced at the turn of the century injun was a slang term for a native american so if you called them engine cycles people would look around expecting to see an indian on a bicycle. ask it a third time and I'll answer a different way

No folks, an engine isn't a motor or vice versa. By definition a motor is electrical - an engine is internal combustion.
