I'd say take in some appalachians as well as coast, like maybe mtns on the way down and coast on the way up, stopping somewhere like the Smoky Mountains and Western North Carolina, or the coastal route the outer banks is the coast of NC. It's supposed to be nice, but crowded in summer. If you like historical cities, check out Charleston, SC and Savannah, Ga.
Jacksonville is not worth a stop. First stop in FLA could be St Augustine. then go to Cape canaveral and cocoa beach if interested in space exploration, or Discovery Dove near Orlando you can swim with the dolphins. Then I'd say head on down to Fort Lauderdale and check out Ft. Laud, Hollywood (has a cool section now, Hollywood blvd. between Federal Highway (US 1) and Dixie Hwy., and of course miami beach, south beach, coral gables, tehn you could go snorkeling at Key largo and go on to key West.
The SW coast of fla. is old people. Around Tampa, Clearwater Beach and St. Peteersburg are nice beaches, but not such a youthful scene as SE Fla.
I wouldn't bother with the panhandle. the beaches are beautiful, but it's all alabama on vacation.
That's all I know.

Stick to the East Coast of Florida. Jacksonville down to Miami.

If you decide to go Orlando, the 2 Universal Studios parks are more fun than any of the Disney parks.

If you get over to Mississippi you might check out Natchez. Antebellum homes and the Mississippi River. The Delta area is the birthplace of many blues musicians and has several blues festivals later in the year. Take scenic Natchez Trace for a portion of the trip if you have time.
