Almost all external hard drives should work on all computers. Even going from Windows computer to a Mac (however you can't go from a Mac to a Windows computer if the external hard drive is formated for Mac OS). You should be able to put all your MP3 files from your Vista and be able to import it to your XP computer without any problems.

If the external drive is using USB interface, it should be plug and play in either OS.
