I just installed a new motherboard on my computer. It isn't the first time I've done it and I've taken many tech classes so I mostly know what I'm doing. I got all the ahrdware in, no problem. I booted it up, and it would restart just shy of loading the OS. It gave me a boot screen saying Windows encountered an error. I tried puttin it up in safe mode and last known good configuration, but none of that worked. Now I boot it up and all it says is "error loading operating system" before Windows even starts to load.

Any suggestions?

You may need a copy of Microsoft XP. If your copy of XP was from the vendor that manufactured the PC there is a good chance it will not work since it is tied to the hardware in the PC. Manufactureres encourage you to buy the replacement motherboard from them.

The existing OS will need to be reconfigured. Your best bet is to borrow a Microsoft version of XP from someone which is legal because Microsoft uses license keys for their copy protection. A VAR can help but they will most likely not leave you with a CD and it will cost as much as buying XP.

Try going into the BIOS (hit F2 repeatedly at the beginning of startup) and set the boot sequence so that the CD/DVD ROM is the first drive in the sequence. Hit escape, save settings. When the machine starts up, you'll get a message "press any key to boot from CD". If that doesn't work, I suggest calling Microsoft because there's something rotten in Denmark.

Try reinstalling the os, if you need to back up you flies by putting you hdd in a different computer and copping what files you need to to a different hdd. If its the os try installing a linux os, ubuntu is a good one. NOTE if your running win 98 or older it might not be compatible.

i think your windows failed the "audit process" . you're only able to do a few upgrades to a computer before it will no longer recognize the hardware configuration...if this is the case, you'll have to reinstall from scratch...

If the motherboards or the chipsets are identical, usually the new set up would boot.
