My father has a 10 gallon fish aqaurim. He wants to know if it really matters to have the fish light on or off in the night time. Fishes don't have eyelids, so does it really matter? I think that the temperature of the light will make the water warmer, but what do you think? On or off?

You should leave the light on for about 10-12 hours during the day and turn it off at night
If you have a tropical tank, you should have a heater in it that takes care of the temperature regulations
Your fish are going to be much healthier if you turn off the lights at night, cause they also sleep just as we do

Hope that answered your question

Good Luck

Yes. Fish need a period of darkness just like all animals (humans included). Keeping the aquarium light on 24/7 will also speed algae growth creating more work for you. You don't necessarily need to set a time and absolutely have to switch the light off right then. As long as it's generally consistent the fish will be fine.

most fish don't need light so its a personal choice. if you grow plants then they have light requirements. algae also has light requirements so a tank with too much light (more than 12 hours a day and no plants) is a perfect home for algae growth. many fish do have sleep cycles and would probably prefer the lights off. some fish are nocturnal and will stay hidden until you do turn the lights out.

you should have the light off at night because it gives the fish at least 8 hours of rest, which it should have. Lighting is very important for young fish, if the light isnt on at least 12 hours a day baby fish can develop spinal deformities. Incandescent lights usually add alittle warmth to the water but not much, florescent lights don't add any heat to the water, just alot more light. Light should be on during the day and off when you go to bed, it also is just good practice so you have one less fire hazard.

Most people recommend that you turn the light off at night. Even though the fish do not have eyelids like mammals, the light does affect their behavior and will confuse them if it is on all the time.

Turn the light off overnight. It keeps the water temperature from becoming too warm, and also it helps simulate the natural day/light cycle for fish and protect their skin from damage from the continuous light.

Fish should have the light off at night so they can sleep.

In a plastic plant tank, the light on the tank is for people, not the fishes. The main problem from leaving them on too long will be excessive algae.

I would suggest it. Having the lights off at night simulates a nocturnal environment, which IMO is the healthiest for the fish.
