If you are extremely close to the grad. (Parent, Grandparent, etc.) then an amount close to 100 - 150 would be generous. But if you are just a family friend I would go from 25 - 40.

The dollar (USA) amount of 15 to 20 unless the family is rather well-to-do, and that would be too little. That is pocket change for them.

A card and a good wish is also valuable, home made if possible.

How much are you willing to part with, and is it a straight cash gift or a cash gift for them to purchase something specific? I would say $20-$50 is good depending on your ability and closeness to this person.
