walmart has a 29 gallon tank, filter, heater, hood for about 95.00

add in gravel, decorations, basic care stuff like a bucket and gravel vacuum and you have easily doubled that.

you can usually find deals on craigslist or ebay -- just set ebay for "closest first" so you don't have to pay shipping.

You can get a 29 gallon from Petsmart here for $29. And set up with lid, I think it is closer to $60 -- and a good filter is like $30. Its' worth it since you can have one goldfish, two fancies, or a variety of smaller fish.

I am saving for a 30 gallon myself, and calculated the cost. Including the tank, filter, heater, gravel, air pump supplies (optional), decorations, water chemicals, fish food and medicine, cleaning supplies, bowls (to put fish in when cleaning aquarium) extra back-up supplies (light bulbs, back-up heater, filter cartridges) and the fish themselves it will cost me close to $600. It will vary upon how cool you want the tank to look, how much you want in there, and the quality of what you want in there.
