The answer is tennis...by far.
ESPN did a scientific study of all sports, and tennis ranked as the 7th toughest sport in the world. Volleyball was ranked far lower. Here is the website: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills
It's just common sense. You run a lot more in tennis, you play for longer, and there is a hell of a lot more strategy involved.
Everyone answering based on their own experience doesn't understand the question. Someone who can barely play tennis doesn't put in nearly as much effort in tennis as a pro volleyball player puts in volleyball. We are talking about the professional level here, not the amateurs.

It depends on the meaning of the question. Tennis, I think, has a much steeper learning curve than volleyball. A healthy and coordinated person should be able to pick up the basics of volleyball within a few days of starting and play effectively on a novice team. Tennis would require a summer of dedicated daily work to pick up the skills to play, even for a very talented athlete.
However, once the basic skills have been learned and one has become a regular player, neither sport has a clear edge in terms of difficulty. 2-on-2 beach volleyball is every bit as hard a workout as tennis singles, and much harder than tennis doubles. The answer would depend on the exact forms of the games you wish to compare.

well it all depends on the person
in tennis u have to get the basics down
and just have a lot of experience in playing
that way u learn how to counter certain things
in tennis there are many...lets say new things that always pop up.
so u have to get more experience
in volleyball u got to have communications
and team work since u have more than 4 people
in both sports u got to train hard
well either one is not harder then the other

Well if you play non competitive volleyball then yeah its not very hard. Never playing before you wouldn't be the best player in the world but its not that hard to catch on. Tennis is not something you can master in one day. It takes time to learn how to control the ball, learning proper forehands and backhands, and learning how to use them to your advantage. I would definitely say tennis is a much harder sport to master while volleyball you could catch on pretty quickly.

I'm a better tennis player than volleyball but I would have to say tennis is a much more difficult sport to play.
one on one with the ball moving at all kinds of pace, spins, angles, etc..
volleyball was one of easiest sports to pick up.

I agree with you. Tennis is much harder to play/master. Volleyball you've got like 5 people on a team, whereas tennis you've got two at the most. The ball is tiny, and you're hitting it with a racket, while in volleyball, it's a huge ball, and you've got far more people to keep it "in"..

I think that tennis its harder, bacause i played volleyball on the highschool, 3 years, at the most youre affected by your height if you want to attack/block, but tennis involves a lot of things, good racquet, movements, grips, serves, tactics...

volleyball, you have someone to depend on since you have a team. when you play tennis, it takes YEARS to get really good. and when you play singles, you have to depend on yourself. so obviously, tennis is harder
