Yep, cattle egrets, or "cowbirds" (this is the problem with nicknames for animals). Not only do they follow livestock around, I've seen them following tractors and such as well... anything that gets the insects running.

Cattle egrets. A flock arrived on one of the Carribean islands having been blown in from Africa by a storm. From there they have spread northward into the US. They can now be found in most of the eastern states during summer months.

This is one of the few cases of naturally caused introductions which is well documented. It is also one of the few cases in which the introduced species has not caused any major environmental problems.

Cattle egrets are one of the most successful colonisers. They arrived in northern Australia from Indonesia in the 1940s and have spread through all the non-desert areas. They are now found on every continent except Antarctica.

Cattle Egrets

They feed on the insects that the cows stir up in the pastures.

Shiny cowbird? They hang out with cattle. You need an ornithologist on this question, though.

They sound like cattle egrets. They wait for the cattle to disturb insects, frogs etc, and then eat them.
