uhh no... it's because they like to explore and discover new things. The way babies learn is by touching and feeling. Once they find their feet they are attracted to them because it's a cool new thing to touch and wiggle :)

Baby Holding Feet

This is a common superstition in many parts of the world.

It isn't a baby holding its feet--it is a newly-walking toddler who grabs his/her ankles and looks between its legs.

The concept is that the baby is progressing quickly and advancing so fast that it is 'getting out of the way' for a new baby to be coming soon.

Precociousness of any kind feeds into this superstition; however, a baby that is a laggard never is supposed to be associated with being the last child, so there is no basis to assume that a fast-maturing child presages a quick sibling.

A nurse in the hospital where I work was just warning us about never propping a bottle! She saw a baby die in literally less than 5 minutes because the bottle was flowing too fast and drowned the baby. And of course the baby couldn't make a sound, so with the mother standing four feet away, he died. You're absolutely right, it is crazy and very dangerous. Never do it!

I think they do it just because they know their mothers can't anymore, and they're spiting them.

Just kidding. There really is no way to ask a baby if they want a younger sibling, and all babies grab their feet. They just like grabbing things, and their feet are right there in grabbing distance.

Babies hold their feet because they CAN.

It likely helps their spatial development to locate their feet both visually and in a tactile manner, and it might just feel good - there are lots of nerve endings in the feet.

I learned babies hold their feet because they've just discovered they can control them and so they like to grab them

Oh, I thought it was because my daughter could reach her toes more easily than her toys (toes were closer) and so went for the easy option!
