I know my connection works because it works on my other computer. The ethernet card conenction lights up showing a connection, but I can not get anything to work. IE or Outlook. I have a second computer with the same deal, this one is connected wirelessly. Netgear shows a connection signal, but I can not get on IE or Outlook. I know the router works because I get internet on my laptop and on my third (crappy $ 25)computer. What can I do?

Is it new? There's probably a glitch in your computer saying you are "offline". Also, check your driver to make sure it is working properly. Check and make sure the cable connections are all OK. When is the last time you turned your computer off for any length of time? Other than that, troubleshoot until the Internet comes on.

Try not to throw your computer out the window.

Ethernet is only one portion of your connection between the two devices. You still need to get a layer 3 protocol working (TCP/IP) ... your best bet is, if these are both computers, is to run the Windows Network Sharing Wizard on the computer that has the internet connection and then use the disk you create during that process on the other computer ... that should get you going ...

If one is a router and the other is a computer, consult your router's manual ... you may need to give the second computer a static IP address in a specific subnet to get it working ... or maybe you need to tell it to use DHCP and enable the DHCP server on your router ...

The bottom line is, the light lighting up on your NIC (Ethernet card) is only the first step in establishing connectivity.

First you need to check the IP address. Go to Type "cmd" Then in the DOS window type "ipconfig". check your IP address and default gateway. Both IP must have the same number except the last one. If your IP number is different than your gateway IP number then definitely you cannot access internet. The solution in set your IP manually and I assume you know how to do it.
