Because you need to run as fast as you possibly can to beat a throw. You can't just stop without sliding, and you can hurt yourself if you slide. If you slowed down before you reached the base, you'd be thrown out easier, that's why you are allowed to over run 1st base.

you can run past any base in baseball.
1st base is the only exception that protects you from being tagged out unless you make an attempt to 2nd base, if so, then you are liable for you being safe or tagged out. it's not really a safety issue since anyone can slide into first base, even though it is strongly recommended that you don't only for the mere reason that sliding actually slows you down.

simple to beat the throw. Plus overrunning first (which you cannot do on a base on balls in baseball) places the runner away from further action not so at second or third (could get in the way of a fielder.).

At least that is my opinion.

This allows you to use your full mommentum without worrying about having to slow down.

However, the moment you make a motion towards second you lose that priveledge and need to either get back to first right away or try for second.

as to it being the only base that can get you out without touching you to out you other than a force out... and you cannot slide on 1st.......
you can only run through the base, straight ahead to be able to overrun... if you turn you can be called for an out if ball is in hand of 1st baseman!

smillingwolf is not even close sorry. You can slide into 1st base.

I don't have your answer but I didn't want anyone else to believe what he was saying.

Because when you run and curve past first base, you are out of play. Therefore, you cannot be tagged out.
