Final Fantasy is a video game franchise. None of the games have a link between them and they have their own universe. There are recurring characters in the series like the summons. The only know game that has a sequel is FFX and FFX-2.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is a sequel to the FFVII game. It picks up after FFVII ending.
FF: Unlimited is a 26 episode anime series.
FF: The spirits within is a stand alone movie.
There is another FF OVA which ran 2 episodes or so.

Final Fantasy is a series of video games, not an anime. It spans from Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy 12 and there is a FF 13 being made. The numbers only mark the order in which they were made. The numbers are in Roman Numerals, so Final Fantasy 10 is X and 11 is XI and so on. Each Final Fantasy has nothing to do with any other Final Fantasy, except for Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 10-2. Otherwise they are not related. Many of the FF games have scenes that play out between gameplay that people like to put up on the internet. Tifa and Cloud are seen in Final Fantasy 7. The girl you are talking about is seen in Final Fantasy 9, and she does cut her hair around the middle of the game.

The games were so popular, some animes were made.
FF: Advent Children was made to follow the end of the Final Fantasy 7 video game.
There are 26 episodes of FF: Unlimited (FF Unlimited is an anime series)
FF: The Spirits Within is a movie that has little to do with Final Fantasy and was a terrible movie in my opinion.
