Or is my information stored elsewhere on my computer?
Or retrievable by some info retrieval program?
How am I assured that my information is permanently gone from my harddrive?

well its still there n u could use a program to go and find it. its not on the operating system, but its still on the hdd platter until the head writes over it again

Secure Empty Trash really does a good job of emptying the trash....

But if it's not in the trash it's still there! Like preferences, and cookies, and browser cache files , you may need to clean them out too!

Secure Empty Trash shreds your files so that they can't be restored using a program.
