My doctor suggested I get the gardasil vaccine. I'm 23 years old and have no STDs. I'm also in a monogamous relationship and in plans to marry the person.

I'm a little confused about the vaccine? I always thought it was for people who already had HPV, but my doctor said that's not the case.

So, my question is; if I'm planning on not having any further sexual partners should I still get the vaccine. I understand that I may not always be w/ my partner (not always divorce, but god forbid death) But, I would never be promiscuous or have unsafe sex.

I'm just afraid that 10 years down the road they are going to find something wrong with this vaccine? I don't want that to happen. It's still relatively knew.

So, please tell me what you know about the vaccine? Should I get it? Are there side effects?

I would be very hesitant about this vaccine.

Keep doing your research on it.

I would not get it because we do not know much about it and it is fairly new.

Hi I understand your concearns. I am 40, been married for over 16 years, and wish it were around when I was young. I had cervical cancer at 29. A total hysterectomy. I have a 21, already gone, so I have no say in that, but I have a non-sexualy active 13 year old. I do plan on getting her vaccinated. Truth is, they tested it or years, I don't have much scientific data at my fingers, I just know they tested and tested it, and it seems to be very safe. As with anything new, time will tell. But with my mom having had it, and myself, I want to protect my daughter from it possibly happening to her. I do know it protects from 3 or four of the 7 or 8 strains of HPV. Good luck with your decision.

I work for a clinic that administers this vaccine. I find it odd that your doctor recommend it to you since it is usually only recommended to people ages 9-18. The vaccine is for people who have not already had sex OR for people who have had sex, but do not have HPV. It is a series of three shots, just like the hep B shot. Even though you are not planning on having sex with anyone else, are you positive your future husband is not carrying the disease? It is a great vaccine. I would not be worried about them finding something wrong with the vaccine, but I can't say I blame you. If I could get the vaccine, I would, but I hear that it is about $300 per shot unless your insurance covers it.

I guess my question is: has your fiance been with anyone other than you? If so, I would get the vaccine if you are negative for hpv just to be safe. There is no test for men, so there is no way to know if he has it. If you have been with anyone other than him, you could have it and not know it. It can lie dormant in your system for years before showing up. If you and he have both been with noone but each other, and you are positive that both of you will always be faithful, then don't get it. Yes, it is recommended for people who do not have hpv, if you already have it, then the vaccine will do you no good. It is recommended up to 26 years old.

I would avoid this vaccine for now. Not nearly enough is known about the long-term side effects. For sure, I would not get the vaccine unless I was beyond puberty, so perhaps one should wait until they are 17 or 18 years old. This vaccine could turn out to be horrible in the long run with women producing freaky deformed babies as a side effect.

hey, im lucy. i got the vaccine and i am 13 years old, i am still waiting on getting my 3rd shot. I think that it is a REALLY great oppertunity to get that shot before having sex so you can be immune to one of the most common STDs in women. So i HIGHLY suggest that you go through with it! I hear that it is perfectly safe to get, so go through with it. Its a bigger chance that you would get HPV without the shot then figuring out that there is something wrong with the shot later. so dont be scared. Just go for it and be "one less" lol

Vaccines are always given to prevent disease. Cervical cancer is almost always caused by HPV. I am over the age limit for the vaccine or I would definitely get it, come on a vaccine to help prevent cancer? Definitely.

The vaccine is for therapeutic and prophalyctic treatment.. If you have the virus it will clear it. If your sexual habits change then you will be protected. Your decision totally. It is called risk analysis.

ok, there aren't any side affects, that i have noticed. I heard it also provents the a virus that can cause cancer. So...even if you don't have STD's or HPV, you should still get it to prevent anything that could come along!!
