Yes, but a lot of viruses hide inside other programs so you'd also have to know how to disassemble a program and eyeball it from there. And there are a lot of tricks virus writers use to keep a virus on your system despite your efforts, so you'll have to be an expert on the OS your using on top of all that. Good luck? Only if you are at least as competent or more competent than the little wizards who wrote the blasted virus in the first place.

If you don't want to buy an AV program, try Windows Defender. It's free for the time being at the Microsoft site.
