You have ask a good question. It happens to me all the time
and I have decided I am tired of it. From now on I am going to
say alright we will be going Dutch. There is one person who
is constantly doing this to me, but the last time she didn't tell
me and when we met she had two others with her. If nothing
else I plan to avoid dinners with her!

There is a simple answer if you are going with a friend who has a habit of "letting" you pay the whole tab. Just let the waitress know when ordering that you will be on a serperater check by yourself. If your friend gives you the look, just say you have to pay with your card or only have large bills, so seperate checks would be easier on the waitress. When check time comes you will each have your seperate own and there is no way they can finagle you inot paying theirs.

I was invited to a birthday party at a restaurant. The husband of the birthday girl told everyone to order whatever they want and was encouraging people to get appetizers. He acted like he was paying, so we got an appetizer and a meal. When the check came, he started dividing it up for each person (25 people). from then on when we went out with him, we got seperate checks, and were always perpared to pay if he "invited" us somehwere.

In a one on one situation, you shouldn't wind up paying the check. If you do, make a satement like "I got this one you got the next" and make them stick to it!

I would never go to dinner with him/her again and if asked why, I would state calmly and politely that payment plans should be worked out when the invitation is made if the inviter doesn't intend to pay. What if you hadn't had enough to cover the tab?

Just pay for it and make sure to let that friend know the next time they invite you to a meal that they're paying because they invited you

Lousy, but it happens all the time. In fact, now when I'm invited out, I make sure everyone knows they are to pay their own bill or don't go! I work too hard for my cash, how about you? Besides, that's how alot of people get to go out more often, they take advantage of others.

How did you end up paying? Did the inviter ask you to pick up the check or just ignore it? Did you jump in and offer to pay it?

ask whoever invited you to the dinner why they cant pay, they will probably not be able to think of a good answer and may end up paying. but remeber, its in no way rude to NOT pay for someones dinner... its actually a favor. so if you do end up paying just make everyone chip in

If you offered and they took the offer, blame yourself
If they left and didnt' pay, do the same to them next time
If they said they didnt' have money, pay it

The fact that you are asking the question means its not really a friend anyways.

I guess I would make it clear but not rude and just say "Ok no problem I got it this time but you got it next" and just smile so they can get the picture. If it happens again DONT ever go out with them when it involves paying any tabs.
Good Luck.
