To fully understand the significance of literature - imagine your life as an illiterate person for a day, a week, a year. Then you will come to understand why literature is the voice of the literate, and speaks in volumes.

Having studied literature I can tell you that its important for a number of reasons:
1. It's like a mirror to the past in some cases, documenting history
2. It makes you think, which is good- you don't want a smooth brain
3. It's entertaining

Besides, once you start reading the classics, MOST of the literary canon and A LOT outside of the American literary canon you will realize how much of what is around you is influenced by works of the past. Makes you start to question things and see in a different way.

it tells you about life and people, it enriches your language skills ( especially if you read in other languages), it makes you spend a good time
