Ok, let's take it one step at a time. You don't say how old you are - I hope not too young to take this step. The most important question is, do you want to do this, or are you doing it for another reason?

Let's say you really want to. Then, I'll ask, what's the guy like? Do you know him well?
Is he a good guy, not just when he's sweet-talking you, but all the time? Most important, does he care about you? If you know him, and he's a good guy, treats you well, and really cares about you, you have a good start.
Physically, I wouldn't be too worried. In my case, I had no pain whatsoever. But, everyone is different. Take it slow. Don't do more than you want to. Use lubricant. Lots of foreplay helps.
It would be good to have a discussion about his sexual background and previous partners, to protect yourself.
And, very important: Use birth control, and protect yourself from Aids, herpes, and other diseases with a condom.

dont do it unless you are comfortable with talking to him about everything that comes along with it. if talking to him is uncomfortable...then he isnt the right person to do it with. i know it seems like everyone is doing it and you are curious but waiting for the right person is important.

if he is the right person then i would recommend using lube. it might hurt or feel uncomfortable physically at first but after a few seconds it feels better.

actually, what my dad told my brother was "if it smells like fish, eat all you wish. If it smells like cologne, leave it alone."

If you're scared then don't do it. It's normal to be a little nervous and apprehensive, but not scared.
