Definitely go by train!! It is the most scenic and can be cheap. You can also go from car to car just checking things out and meeting new people! That is how I love to travel. And when you get to Budapest...give it a big kiss for me! I will be back at Christmas time...not soon enough!

I checked the wesite
germanwings.com
and typed in July 27 from Cologne to Budapest and they have flights from 35 to 49 euros one way nonstop, probably before taxes. I didn't know what date to put, but try it.
Otherwise you could take the train, but it's a lot more expensive than that. You can leave aachen at 17.10 to Koln, arr. 18.12, change to 18.35 train to Munich, arr. 23.04, change to night train munich to budapest 23.45-9.08 next a.m. According to raileurope.com the price would be over 400 euros, but maybe you could get an interail ticket or youht pass. I'd take germanwings this time.
Or, you can go through Prag, which is a bit cheaper, but you have to get change 2 x also.
Go to www.oebb.at , the Austrian Railways site, to look up more possibilities.
Aachen to Koln is an easy train ride, or if you find a cheaper flight from dusseldorf, it's easy on the train from aachen to dus.
