Flakes or betta pellets should be the staple food you feed most of the time. In addition to that you can feed any frozen foods like blood worms or brine shrimp.

hi there. I've kept Betta's for a few years now, and have lots of experience in feeding them. As I have a community tank with many other fish in it, I have to keep lots of differnt foods, and I know exactly what my bettas prefer!
They tend to avoid most of the flakes. They will sometimes eat them, but almost always spit them out again.
There is no chance of them ever eating the algea wafers or cat-fish pellets, as Betta's are top-feeders and never forage at the bottom of the tank.
Like someone has already mentioned, you can buy Hikari Betta food, which mine all LOVE, and they also enjoy the Hikari Mini Pellets.
Personally, I always buy King British Tropical Fish Mini Pellets for my betta, and they absolutely ADORE them! My Betta rarely eat anything other than this. I usually have to hand-feed them. I will drop the food in for all my other fish, and then wait for my Betta to come towards my hand. I will then drop the pellets in, one at a time, and watch them gobble them up. It's so adoreable, and makes me feel really close to them.
If you are American, i'm not sure if you can buy King British over there, but you could always order on line.
Also, My betta's have always loved frozen blood-worms.
Whenever I drop the cube into the tank, they will be the first to grab big mouthfulls of it, and it seems to be their favourite food!
I would avoid any live blood worms however, as they can quite often carry parasites and diseases.
Another thing that I love to feed them is very finely chopped ham, which they love!
Hope this has helped and good luck!

I did an experiment on which Betta food is the best. The top Betta food makers are all similar. I also tested frozen brine shrimp. The Pellets and the shrimp clouded up the water, and the pellets smelled really bad after being in the water. The flakes didn't smell, and they didn't cloud up the water. They dropped to the bottom of the bowl, so make sure to clean the rocks out once a month or so. Or just feed them smaller amounts.
Hope it helps!

The best one you are probably going to be able to find in local stores is Hikari Betta Gold. It is a high quality food and it is quite inexpensive especially when you consider how little a fish really eats.

Please keep in mind that Bettas are meat eaters not plant eaters. So most tropical fish flakes and pellets are not suitable for them. You absolutely need to buy something that specifically states Betta on it. And it really is best to stick with a high quality product such as Hikari.

Just go to a pet store like PetCo or whatever and buy the stuff available there. They have tons of brands marked specifically for beta fish.

There's betta bio gold. It's good for them and helps with the coloring too. A lot of the betta flake and pellet food is good for them and they too work to enhance the coloring on your betta. They also love frozen brine shrimp. Mine go crazy over that stuff.

I bought my betta betta pelletes but he never seemed to eat them. After moving him into the big tank with the other tropical fish I confirmed that he wasn't eating them. He LOVES tropical fish food and always tries to eat the flakes and won't touch his food.

Bettas can eat the special Betta foods that they have at pet shops - Hikari is a good one - and live blood worms are very good for them too.
