Aphids will literally suck the life out of a plant. Knock them off with a strong spray of water & use baby shampoo or dish soap spray . The recommended dilution rate is 1 oz. mild Dishwashing Liquid to 1 gallon of water.
OR
1 Tablsp vegetable oil 1 Tablsp. mild dish soap
2 gal. water. Upon coming into contact with an insect the oil will coat and smother the insect. Use this method when it's cooler as it may burn when it's hot out. I spray my roses early in the morning.
A solution from http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/tips/... Blend together 1 garlic bulb, 1 small onion, 1 t cayenne pepper, 1 quart water. Steep one hour and add 1 T liquid hand soap
Antidote for Rose Aphid
1 orange peel, coarsely chopped
1 tbsp. baby shampoo or mild dish detergent
2 cups water
blend on high speed for 10-15 seconds. Strain into coffee filter, & pour liquid into handheld sprayer. Hose down bushes to knock off aphids. Then mist spray the plants.
Plant repellent plants like allium (chives, garlic, onions) as companion plants surrounding or bordering the plants which are susceptible to aphids.
A spray can also be made from Seaweed, which will repel both red spider mites and aphids. It will nourish your plants, too.

Get a clean empty spraybottle. Put 2 tablespoons of powered cayanne pepper in the bottle and fill with water. Shake it very well and spray the plants. This works for most all bugs and must be done after a good rain or a good soaking. Just mist the plant lightly with the pepper spray do not over do it. It is safe, non-toxic, inexpensive and effective. It will also keep male dogs from going on the plants if they are outdoor plants. This is safe on food plants but must be washed thoughly before using of stop spraying just before the harvesting. Make sure houseplants are out of reach of very small children. Kids may touch the plant and transfer the pepper residue to their mouths or eyes. I will not injure them but will cause them some pain for a few minutes. This works well and you'll like the results!

I Tablespoon Tabasco Sauce, 6 cloves Garlic (chopped fine), 1 Qt. warm Water. Mix together and allow to sit for 1 hour. Strain and spray. Make sure that you also spray the undersides of the leaves. If you have a problem with Aphids outdoors, they hate the following plants: Nasturtium (best), Onion & Garlic.

Take a small amount of dish liquid (dawn, palmolive, etc) and mix in a spray bottle of water. Spray the aphid-ridden part of the plant and they will leave (or die) almost immediately.Do this every so often to keep them away.
