Can you imagine if a private company came forward and said that they will be going to Mars before anyone else and that they will be turning the whole trip into a reality show called "The Longest Yoyage" or something like that, would you watch the show or Protest the fact that they shamelessly use a sacred instatute like space travel as a way to entertain the masses?

I don't see entertainment recouping the costs. Reality TV sucks. The only reason networks like it is that it is very cheap to make. Going to Mars isn't cheap, so why bother? That said, I would watch it only if the one loser every week could actually get kicked out of the spaceship. That might make things seem a little less fake.

It's a good possibility with emerging companies like SpaceX XCOR, SpaceDev, and StarChaser industries; to name a few. If there's money to be made by commercializing space one would be a fool not to jump on the train, so to speak, early. Look at all the early investors in companies, like Apple Computers, Microsoft, even Coca Cola are many of these investors broke? I think not.

while it is true that NASA does not have its priorities straight, they have more experience in the space industry. I do not think that the private has the funds or time to catch up with NASA's experience. The private industry cannot get a rocket into space as far as i know

All of NASA's equipment is made by private industry. NASA won't make it to Mars without private industry. And they will make LOTS of money off it. The whole rediculous idea of going to mars is just a way to finance the military-industrial complex between wars...

It would take 18 months to get there. What could you watch the crew doing for that long? Reading a book?

It is a distinct possibility. NASA hasn't had its priorities very straight since the 1970s.
