Hello, Dell and HP are really competitive in the laptop indusry. However, there are many bad things about HP laptops:
1) they breaks more frequently
2) Their customer support and technical support is awful and wastage of time, whenever Dell tech support is excellent, but they are still not solid, read more....

You need 2gb ram to use vista properley. Dont ever buy a vista laptop with 512 or 1gb.

I'm using computers from last years and have had changed many many laptops and desktops. One of the best laptop which hardly ever breaks is: Sony Vaio
http://www.sony.com

Sony vaio laptops may sound a bit expensive, but these laptops are loaded with quality software to fulfill your needs, Sony's FE series are very offordable. Their tech support is not really great, but Sony also offers you online support via chat or via email, as well knowledge based articles. The best thing about Sony Vaio is "THE RELIABILITY". Moreover, they are extremly solid computers made by Sony, and most of the parts are made by Sony.Always buy Sony's two years extended warranty for extra protection. Buy from Sony Stores if you have any, as you can bargain with them and you can save up to $200.

If you plan to go with mac, buy directly from apple, or from apple's 1-800-myapple and ask for the student discount. You can also purchase your mac from one of Apple's physical stores if you have any in your area.

I have posted a recent answer at yahoo which is also very informative and was choosen best, please follow this link:

Mac software, both the OS X operating system and the applications such as iPhoto and GarageBand bundled with it, have gotten steadily better, while Windows seems stuck in a rut.

Meanwhile, new Mac hardware based on Intel (INTC) processors has erased the performance gap between Macs and products from Hewlett-Packard (HP), Dell (DELL), and others in the Windows camp. The move to Intel also lets Macs run most Windows programs, either by rebooting using Apple's (AAPL) Boot Camp software, or right on the Mac desktop using Parallels Workstation.

Students who know about Windows Vista, the first major improvement in Windows in five years, might be inclined to stick with PCs. But Vista, which won't be out until next year, may not do much more than catch up to OS X. And before Vista ships, Apple plans to release a new version of OS X called Leopard that will likely raise the bar even higher.

In laptops, which most students probably prefer, there's the 13-in. widescreen MacBook starting at $1,099, and the 15.4-in. and 17-in. widescreen MacBook Pros, starting at $1,999 and $2,799, respectively. In each case, even the base models are pretty well loaded; the one step I recommend, if you are looking at a model with just 512 megabytes of memory, is to increase that to 1 gigabyte.

Good Luck!

You can get a lemon at any time. Your will be wise to buy from a manufacturer who has been in business for a while, has a good reputation, and who offers good support. Support is as important as price - trust me.

I have two desktops, so a laptop was my toy. On Sundays, our local paper comes with tons of ads - which I go through very carefully. A couple of weeks ago I got my laptop on a one-day sale for $399 - with a free printer. It is a Toshiba. I consider Toshiba to be reliable. I also like Dell and HP.

For the best deal, watch for ads. Visit Dell and HP websites regularly. Check for refurbished. My sisters each got exceptional deals on refurbished computers. Many "deals" are not advertised. You just have to keep returning to the websites and catch a deal. You can also check www.amazon.com where you will get a list of laptops by price. I have found Amazon to be good to deal with.

How about if I tell you to forget the rest and buy the best? That's right, Dad does the best in choosing laptops, and of course my recommended company would be apple.

What is a Macbook? Now, let Daddy help you.

The Macbook is Powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor at speeds up to 2.16GHz, the new MacBook is the fastest ever. That's right, slowness is what you don't experience with a Macbook. Just one click takes you to where you want to go. How simple and fun that is!!!

I recommend the new Macbook. Why? Because the new MacBook now comes with 1GB of memory standard and larger hard drives for the entire line — perfect for running more of your favorite applications and storing growing media collections. That's right, and they're more to be introduced.

When you buya notebook, it must look attractive to impress others. That's right, you do not want to walk around with an ugly notebook from HP company. The Macbook makes it easy to hit the road thanks to its tough polycarbonate case, built-in wireless technologies, and innovative MagSafe Power Adapter that releases automatically if someone accidentally trips on the cord.

Sleek, 1.08-inch-thin design is what I love about the Macbook.

Visit http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore to check out the Macbook and happy buying.

You just heard from Dad.

I definitely have had my HP for 5 years and have had little or no problems, extra utility subject concerns than hardware. Toshiba is huge yet fairly, all and sundry has a stable product. the warm button is to purchase the better conclusion variations. and of direction with Laptops you want to get as lots advancements as obtainable, considering is to high priced and not cost efficient to do Hardware advancements when you have offered it. additionally, when you stumble on the kind you want, that's advisable to ask in case you will get it in a advertisement or improve casing. i be attentive to Dell makes those for our community Police branch and the ordinary public can organize them to. they are 10 circumstances extra stable and ask your self resistant. i could stay removed from the "Acer" sort we've various undesirable good fortune with them at artwork. indexed below are Cnets authentic 5 manufacturers are: The Apple professional, Toshiba Portege, HP Envy 17, Samsung Qx410, and the HP Pavilion dm1.

This is a matter of opinion. The best thing to do is think about what you will be using the laptop for. If it is just for research and doing school work, I'd recommend an HP.

If you are an avid gamer, I'd suggest Sony or Dell.

depends on what you want it for. They specialise for multimedia, office, general, compact and others. Sony make their laptops with GREAT displays, HP is good for office and general use. Look around different stores and tell the salesperson if you saw it cheaper somewhere else, they usually throw in a bunch of extras
