The Red Army consisted of those supporting the Bolshevik takeover. The whites were deposed nobles, capitalists, re.ligious people, non-Russian ethnics, supporters of liberal democracy and others who opposed the Bolsheviks. Natually the conflicting interests of the white factions virtually guaranteed they would eventually lose.

The Civil war originated in the October Revolution in 1917 when the Bolsheviks seized power.
The Bolsheviks were the Red Army and the supporters of the old Czarist regime were the White Army.
The Bolsheviks had no allies . the White army was supported with troops and supplies by other nations such as Britain.
The object of the Bolsheviks was to overthrow all traces of the previous regime which had kept the mass of the population in semi-slavery for centuries.
Unfortunately one cruel regime was replaced with another when they won.

Due to the catastrophe of WWI and the Rasputin scandal, leading Russian politicans forced the Czar to resign. This was the March 1917 revolution, which formed a Provisional Government headed by the "liberal" Kerensky. This government and the army wanted to continue the war against Germany, but soldiers were deserting at a fanastic rate. Lenin was sent to Russia by the German secret service to stir up a revolution. He arrived in St. Petersburg in April and thanks to the gifted propaganda work of Trotsky many workers, sailors and soldiers joined the Bolsheviks. In Novemeber they siezed the Winter Palace and then sent a detachment to sieze Moscow.
Some generals regarded themselves as professional soldiers and didn't care much about politics. They were absorbed into the new Red Army. Other generals were determined to throw out the Reds, and formed the White army. Russia is a huge country and many of the White units had to travel long distances to fight the Reds. Kornilov was one of the leading White generals, Trotsky the Red marshal.
Both sides used horrible brutality and the civil war was god awful. Since it totally disrupted the economy, a horrendous famine followed. It was a cursed time.
