wow. go to your electrical box and see if the switch needs to be turned on. go out side and see if the switch on the air conditioner is on. look to see if mice or rats have chewed the wiring around the air conditioner out side. go to your air filter on the furnance and clean it or change it out. hummmm if it doesnt work then call the air guy out. tell him you want the thing fixed not changed out. you arnt made of money. a new air conditionar could cost with instalation like 1400. you can buy one for 500 or 600 and instal it yourself. or you can get the wiring fixed for a high 450. and no warrenty if it will work. i got the wiring fixed last year for 450 and its been humming nicely this summer. my aunt had a problem too and someone had just turned off the switches. good luck.

Unfortunately, you will probably need to call someone to look at the unit as it could be due to a number of reasons. It is a good idea to have a small unit in the bedroom in addition to the central air. If the central unit does not work, you have a back up. Also, it is not necessary to run air for the entire area where you live at night--only the bedroom. It will save you on your electric bills.

It probably isn't working. Did you check the thermostat to make sure someone didn't turn it up? If the AC isn't working, the outside unit is probably plugged up. Air needs to flow through the metal fins on the outside to work properly. I blow mine out with an air compressor once a year (from the inside out). Other than that, did you check your furnace filter to make sure it isn't plugged?

As a homeowner, you can check the thermostat to see if it is "calling" for cooling, check the filter to see that it is clean, possibly check the indoor coil to see that it is clean, check the circuit breaker or service shutoff on the outdoor unit, check the coils on the outdoor unit.
Other than that, you will need to consult a professional service technician.
