It could be quite expensive to replace the compressor, because you need to replace other parts with it. The reciever drier and expansion valve. Plus oil and new refrigerant. It might be a bearing or your clutch in the compressor, but it is hard to do it while its on the vehicle. Most mechanics remove it and put it in a vice. And to remove the compressor you need to recover and evacuate the system. Your gonna have to just bite the bullet and take it to a professional.

There are 2 parts to the AC pully on the compressor. The electric clutch and bearing set and the compressor itself. My guess is that the clutch failed and froze, which is why your belt smoked and broke. This part is replaceable without replacing the entire compressor. You can test this yourself, the pulley on the compressor with no belt on it should spin freely, if not it is the clutch that failed. This will save you a lot of money, as this may be replaceable without opening the ac system.

It may not be the compressor, it may just be the belt tension adjuster that froze up on you. Any decent mechanic should spot this right away. A few hundred for a new compressor by the way.
good luck......

figure on over a grand at a shop to replace the compressor, expansion valve, reciever dryer, flushing the system, and new oil with a recharge

Is the pulley bearing locked or the actual compressor?
