I've often wondered this. Is there any major or even minor difference between the two, or are they just two titles for the same thing.

They are the same thing, just like counselor or barrister.
Incidentally, the letters Esq. (Esquire) after a persons name means Attorney also.

In the US the to terms refer to exactly the same thing. In other countries, there may be differences.
