I was wondering if there are any types of cichlids that I can have in a 10 gallon tank?

I have kept tropical community fish for decades and I am pretty experienced in fish keeping. However, I never had cichlids and I would really like to try them. Sadly, all my bigger tanks are filled with community fish and the 10g tank is the only tank that is going to be empty soon.

Also, I prefer American cichlids over African cichlids.

Dwarf cichlids and rams can be nice and are redily avaliable.

Another nice option are the generaly small fish of lake Tanganyika. They have very interesting habbits and with a small ammount of research you could find multiple species for a small cichlid community, even in a ten.

I know youd like American cichlids, but I rarely see them in stores and wouldnt recomend them for a small tank. The africans have excillent behaviors and if you try it out, Im sure youll be hooked.

the convict cichlids are a great fish to keep in the 10gal they dont get too big and they are easy to care for but to be honest i wouldn't keep more than 6 or so in there they can get very aggressive especially while breeding and they do breed alot they are like the guppy of the egg layers really no special treatment to get them to breed but they are also fun to watch there parenting they are great parents but like i said watch out because you will end up with a lot of them if your not careful

You need to check out apistogrammas. Many of the species in this group can be kept in small groups and even breeding colonies in a 10 gallon tank.
