Question:
Is masturbation allowed or prohibited? What kinds (under some preconditions!) may be acceptable, if any?
Answer:
As far as the legal standing of self induced sexual pleasure is concerned, the Shari`ah is absolutely silent on this topic. I, therefore cannot say that masturbation is prohibited in the Islamic Shari`ah.
Looking at your question from another perspective, we must always remember and keep reminding ourselves that our temporary life in this world is a test, the result of which in case of success is an everlasting bliss, and in case of failure is an everlasting punishment. Success in this test depends on our commitment and our efforts to cleanse and purify ourselves from all evil and impiety. We have been given the choice by our Creator to live a life seeking only to gratify our pleasures in this world and thereby lose all hope of success in the hereafter or to live a life with our eyes fixed on the ultimate success in the hereafter. Opting for the second choice does not imply that we live a life of an ascetic. It just means that we fulfill all our needs and pleasures keeping ourselves within the limits prescribed by our Creator and try to refrain from all such things and actions that may, in any way, hinder in cleansing and purifying our mind, soul and body. According to the Qur'an, the most important and basic requirement for achieving tazkiah or purification (which is a necessary condition for success in the hereafter) besides living our lives within the prescribed limits is to keep our hearts and minds enlightened with the remembrance of our Creator.
My dear brother, self induced sexual gratification is normally sought when a person is unable to relieve his/her sexual tensions or live out his/her sexual fantasies in the naturally prescribed and allowed manner. Such tensions, in turn, are normally a result of a mind that is highly indulgent in sexual thoughts. There are innumerable stimulants of sexually oriented thoughts in the world society today. It can thus sometimes become highly difficult to avoid these stimulants and as a result keep from becoming a prey of their attack. In any case, one must always keep in mind that from the perspective of success in the hereafter, only the moments spent with a mindful heart are moments effectively used. Wild and sexual thoughts can only enter our minds and hearts if there are empty spaces not filled with the remembrance of our Creator. In my opinion, therefore, we should try to keep our hearts and minds filled with pious and Godly thoughts and plans and keep ourselves busy in doing something productive and thus avoid and refrain from sexual stimulants and all such other thoughts and activities which may in anyway hinder in the process of purifying our minds, souls and bodies.
